History of The Healing Place Charity Championship

The idea to develop The Healing Place began in March 2001, when the founding members watched a 20/20 documentary of The Dougy Center.  Located in Portland, OR, The Dougy Center provides support in a safe place where children, teens, young adults, and their families grieving a death can share their experiences. It was the first center in the United States to provide peer support groups for grieving children.

After viewing the program, a meeting was organized of those in Colbert, Lauderdale and Franklin counties who were providing grief support services.  It was determined that there was a need for a facility to be established to meet some of the unmet needs of grieving children and families in the community.

During the fall of 2001, a Board of Directors was established and began meeting and planning to develop the grief center. The Healing Place: A Center for Loss & Change was incorporated on September 27, 2001.  Jackie and Connie Scogin offered to build the facility in memory of his father on an acre of his land in Tuscumbia. The Board selected the house plan and upon completions of the facility in October of 2001, the Board signed the lease agreement.

The Board hired the director in November 2001 to work on modeling the program after The Dougy Center. The Healing Place opened on January 8, 2002 and the first group was held on January 22, 2002. The Healing Place received non-profit 501 (c) (3) status in May 2002.

In late 2002, Florence native and PGA TOUR standout Stewart Cink expressed an interest in starting a  golf tournament to benefit a local charity.   In 2003, The Healing Place Charity Championship was planned with a modest goal of $25,000 budgeted for the donation to The Healing Place.  The Florence community embraced the tournament, which raised almost $60,000 the first year.  Over the past 7 years, the golf tournament has given over $700,000 to The Healing Place.  The event was incorporated in 2007 (The Healing Place Charity Championship, Inc.) and achieved 501 (c) (3) status in June 2007.
